The famous Castelli Romani are located about 20 km south of Rome and there are 13 municipalities that can be considered within this area.
Since the times of ancient Rome they have provided a green refuge from the city and even today the Romans, but also tourists, still flock to the area especially during summer weekends.
As we said there are 13 municipalities of the Castelli Romani but the most famous places are Castel Gandolfo, where the papal residence is and where the Pope spends his summer and Frascati, famous, among other things, for its delicate white wine. .
What to visit during a trip to the Castelli Romani?
Frascati is easily not only by car but also by bus and train from Rome and right here you can treat yourself to a refreshing day trip with delicious food and wine.
Here you can also visit the Tuscolano Museum with imperial artifacts and interesting models of Tusculum villas, the 16th century Villa Aldobrandini of which only the gardens can be visited. If you have a car you can reach the ruins of ancient Tusculum, the remains of what was once an imposing amphitheater. At the end of the visit, take the time to learn about the gastronomic specialties along with a breath of fresh air on hot summer days and a glass of the famous white wine of the area.
Continuing south-west you arrive at Castel Gandolfo, a pretty hilltop village of medieval origin. Dominating the town is the summer residence of the 17th century Pope, where the Pope spends the months of July and August. Castel Gandolfo overlooks the intense blue waters of Lake Albano where you can bathe, rent sun loungers and pedal boats and sail around its banks, have coffee. The lake is really a great way to escape the scorching heat of the capital.
The Castelli Romani area is also the guardian of two volcanic lakes. The smallest, Lake Nemi, was the favorite holiday destination of the emperor Caligula. Here you can visit the Museum of Roman Ships with two original scale models of two specimens recovered from the lake in 1932 but destroyed by a fire in 1944. In this area you can enjoy excellent game and trout along with the refreshing local wine.
How to get there and get around
There are several buses from Rome to Frascati, but the best way to reach the city is by using the trains that leave every 30 minutes from Termini Station (every 60 minutes on Saturdays and every 120 minutes on Sundays). From Frascati to Castel Gandolfo there are no trains but only buses that depart from Piazza Marconi.
