Punta Penna beach in the Punta Aderci Nature Reserve is a beach of fine golden sand located on the Adriatic coast of Abruzzo, in Vasto, Italy. The beach is protected by a nature reserve and bordered by a precious dune system which offers an oasis of peace and tranquility as well as the possibility of admiring plants and flowers specific to this area.
This beach is ideal for swimming, fishing, snorkelling and coastal walks. The reserve also offers the opportunity to observe the typical wildlife and flora of the area, such as migratory birds, sea turtles and Mediterranean plants.
Two peculiarities of Punta Penna beach
A beach that did not exist last century. This beach is very recent and is not even a hundred years old. In fact, the beach of Punta Penna, as we know it today, did not exist before the establishment of the recent port of Punta Penna which took place after the Second World War (it was destroyed during the war). In reality, the people of Vasto already came here for a day at the beach, but it was only thanks to the construction of the north pier of the port that the sand, instead of flowing south, began to accumulate and give birth to both the beach itself and the complex and suggestive system dune behind him. Even today, for this reason, the Punta Penna Beach “grows” every year by a few centimeters in width.
A beach where you can admire both sunrise and sunset. “How is it possible that the sun sets over the sea in the Adriatic?”. In fact, it is rightly thought that in all places on the Adriatic Sea it is possible to see the sunrise over the sea and not the sunset. In reality, Punta Penna beach has a particular angle with the promontory of Punta Aderci on its right (west orientation) and the port on its right (east orientation). So one of the features that makes this beach unique is precisely the possibility of admiring, from the same point, both the sunrise (on the port) and the sunset (on the promontory), both on the sea.
In what period is it recommended to visit it?
The beach is busy all year round, but the busiest time is from June to September when the weather is warm and sunny. The visit is also pleasant in spring when the colors of nature are at their most beautiful.
