The Park of Chia Waterfalls extends over a mostly wooded area of about 20 hectares owned by the Collective Domain of the Agricultural University of Chia. Inside the Park you will find 2 unconnected trails being on two different levels, whose total length is about 2 km, but there are no time limits in following them and each visitor can stop inside the Park from when he enters until the closure. Even though the paths are in the woods, they do not present trekking difficulties, but they are easily followed by everyone and are well signposted.
What are the trails to follow in the Chia Waterfall Park?
Pier Paolo Pasolini trail
The Pier Paolo Pasolini Path, this path through the woods takes you to the Chia Tower, the last home of Pier Paolo Pasolini, which can only be visited externally.
Along the way you will find Largo Gigi Proietti, Largo Vittorio Gassman and Largo Pier Paolo Pasolini, places dedicated to 3 great personalities of Italian cinema who loved these places and where they set scenes from films such as The Gospel according to Matthew, the Brancaleone Army, Casotto .
Along the way you will find a panoramic terrace from which to admire the Falls from above, it is a rocky outcrop where P.P. Pasolini was shooting the Gospel according to Matthew from above.
The slightly uphill path takes you as far as the Torre di Chia or Colle Casale, located on the left of the Fosso Castello, also called Fosso Rio, near the confluence with the Fosso Fontana Vecchia.
Those ruins include an irregularly shaped crenellated wall surrounding the remains of a castle located almost on the edge of a natural cliff. The wall is marked by 2 towers with a pentagonal base, the first of which, at the entrance to the area, is 42 meters high. In the surroundings, finds from various periods can be identified which document the stratification of the various settlements in an area inhabited since the Etruscan-Roman period. (Read more)
Trail of the Mills
The path is located inside an enchanted forest, where large, sometimes hollow trunks, twisted branches, boulders covered with moss and ferns, the songs of birds and the shy flowers in the undergrowth make the atmosphere of this place an enchanted and wonderful world …almost magical! But suddenly the view is surprised by its magnificent waterfalls and waterfalls that proceed quickly between the dense vegetation and the gigantic peperino boulders that testify to the volcanic nature of this area.
Above the Falls you can walk on the dam bed, overlooking the falls for a romantic moment. Along the path, you will skirt the Gora, the canal that carried water to the first Molino del Grano, continuing you will arrive at a second barrier that was used to supply the second oil mill with water, interesting is the second Gora that passes under the path until you reach the oil mill.
This immense historical and environmental heritage is the ideal place to spend a day dedicated to history, nature and relaxation. (Read more)
