In this article we will tell you how to reach and visit the Hermitage of San Bartolomeo in Legio, one of the most beautiful and particular among those of Pietro da Morrone, or Celestine V, the Pope of Rejection.
First of all, some information on the Hermitage of San Bartolomeo
The hermitage is located on a rocky spur of about 50 meters at 700 m above sea level. in the Majella, in the municipality of Roccamorice, a short distance from the hermitage of Santo Spirito a Majella. The hermitage dates back to before the 11th century and was restored by Pietro dal Morrone, the future Pope Celestine V, around 1250. He settled here around 1274 for at least two years, on his return from his trip to Lyon to obtain from the pope Gregory X the recognition of his Congregation of the celestines.
Here are the routes you can take to reach the hermitage: one short and simpler and another longer but still feasible with a minimum of training.
Paths to reach the Hermitage
- From Decontra (Caramanico). The starting point of our itinerary is Decontra, a small village in the municipality of Caramanico Terme overlooking the Orfento Valley. From here, leave the car at a crossroads between two cart roads immediately after leaving the town, continue on foot on the CP path to the right, following the signs for “Anello di Valle Giumentina”.
After the first few minutes of walking, you will come to another crossroads and the signs made up of wooden signs will once again show you the right way to go. Then turn left following again for Valle Giumentina. (continue reading on Majambiente) - From Roccamorice. Just before the restaurant, a sign leads us to take a cart track to the left which crosses a small wood and descends gradually, initially leading through the broom and then through the open fields. Near an iron crucifix, cross a dirt road, continuing straight ahead (sign) and passing an area of ferns that take you to the edge of the valley. The steepest descent begins now (continue reading on PlantMountain)
