Molise really exists! Between uncontaminated nature and wild landscapes you can enjoy this wonder. The Sanctuary of the Addolorata of Castelpetroso is a jewel immersed in nature, designed in neo-Gothic style by Francesco Gualandi of Bologna.
The Sanctuary is dedicated to the Madonna and Molise himself and is entirely carved in local stone. The Basilica was built a few meters from the ancient sheep track traveled by shepherds and pilgrims nestled among the green woods.
The temple plan symbolizes a heart pierced by seven swords. The path that leads to the Sanctuary strikes the visitor. Along the avenue, on a path of reflection, two suggestive angels, Michael and Gabriel, are placed at the edge of the car park and remind us of the attitude in which the pilgrim must place himself.
In the square in front, an 80 quintal altar in which John Paul II celebrated the Eucharist on 19 March 1995 while visiting the Sanctuary.
