In the picturesque scenery of the Trigno valley floor, there is the majestic Madonna del Canneto Sanctuary. This splendid religious complex, whose current structures date back to the 11th and 12th centuries, is steeped in a history that has its roots in much older times.
The cult of the Mother of God in this area is, in fact, longstanding. Archaeological excavations have revealed the presence of a Roman settlement, with the remains of a luxurious villa and an agricultural company that produced oil, thus testifying to the historical and cultural importance of the place since Roman times.

Where is it
The complex of the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Canneto is located in the fascinating town of Canneto, in the municipality of Roccavivara (CB), in Molise.
The church
The Church, characterized by a simple sloping façade, has a Romanesque portal with a lunette carved in relief. The external walls contain tombstones and inscriptions from the Roman and medieval periods.
On the right side stands the mighty bell tower, completed in 1329 by Abbot Nicola.
In the lower part there are Roman memorial stones and stones; higher up, two stylophorous lions from the Roman era, while in the upper part there are narrow single-lancet windows and a double order of large triple-lancet windows. The austere interior is divided into three naves by pillars and columns, with some interesting capitals.
The Villa Rustica
The Roman villa rustica, located near the Trigno river, included three parts: manor (master’s home), rustica (rooms for shepherds, slaves and stables) and fructuaria (warehouses).
They had been producing oil and wine since the 1st century AD. and they had a ceramic kiln and a bread oven. A fire destroyed the main part, while the rustic part continued to be used. The villa was gradually abandoned in the 3rd century and subsequently replaced by a sanctuary, enlarged between the 9th and 12th centuries.
