Abruzzo. It is not easy to make a list of less touristy places in Abruzzo since, we can say, that all the tourists who decide to come to know this region are distributed more or less equally throughout the territory. From the sea to the mountains, from villages to nature reserves, rivers, lakes and waterfalls.
In this short article, we recommend 5 less touristy places because their photos are less present on social media, but obviously they are not to be considered less beautiful and interesting to visit.
La Grotta Scura (Dark Grotto), Bolognano
Visiting the Dark Grotto you will be able to discover important evidence of the Neolithic period. This cave can be considered as a “fossil river”, that is a cavity generated by the ancient flow of water with signs of both human presence and cave animals.
The Grotta Scura overlooks an incredible canyon that was dug by the Orta river during millions of years characterized by imposing vertical walls on which it is possible to see several other caves. (Find out more)
The Parello Waterfall, Quadri (Ch)
Very nice place surrounded by nature. If you want to spend a different day, stop by. There are routes suitable for everyone, you can practice climbing, admire nature in all its beauty. At the entrance to the town of Quadri you can see a waterfall that in winter, especially when the snow melts, becomes imposing and impetuous. The jump of the waterfall is over 90 meters and has produced a real chasm, on which a natural lake has formed at the bottom, the color of the water is wonderful. (Find out more)
Pennadomo, the town of blades, Chieti
Pennadomo will surely be a village that will surprise you. With a historic center that seems to climb on bare rock and with a beautiful viewpoint on the less known part of Lake Bomba.
Already from its name you can guess the particularity of the country. Pennadomo, in fact, derives from “Penna in Domo” (“pen” from “pinna”) which refers to a boulder that emerges from the ground and from “domus” which refers to the feuds that in the 10th century to which Pennadomo was also part , including Torricella Peligna, Palena, Lama dei Peligni, Taranta Peligna and Pizzoferrato, with Juvanum being the capital of the Roman region. Archaeological excavations of Juvanum, Montenerodomo (Chieti)
Juvanum is an archaeological site from the Roman era. It is located in the countryside of Montenerodomo, in the province of Chieti. There is a forum, a temple and a basilica, the remains of a Roman settlement following the social war and probably initially inhabited by iuvenes (“young”) (hence the name). The site is open to the public and managed by the municipality of Montenerodomo. (Find out more)
Acquevive Park (Taranta Peligna)
The Sorgente delle Acquevive and its river park, born on the two banks of the Aventino river, are one of the places in Abruzzo that you should definitely visit on your next Abruzzovacation.
