In the itinerary in Abruzzo that we recommend in this short article, you will be able to get to know a cross-section of this very particular green region of Europe, visiting a thunderous waterfall, a ghost village and the “terrace of Abruzzo”.
These are certainly not very touristy places and outside the normal tourist circuits. These are places that are concentrated in the Sangro valley, the eastern part of the Maiella national park.
A simple itinerary, within everyone’s reach
You will discover a very simple itinerary that can also be done with children and less trained people in tow and which will allow you to see three very evocative and particular places where you can take photos that will certainly immortalize beautiful memories.
The first stop we recommend is the Pennadomo waterfall, which is located inside the gorge of the same name. It is a place that can be easily reached from the road and will allow you to admire the beauty and power of the waters that have sculpted rocks that look like papier-mâché.

Continuing, in the second stop, you can reach the ghost village of Buonanotte. It is a very suggestive village where time seems to have stopped when the inhabitants had to abandon it due to a still active landslide. Here you will find modern art installations and the famous “always on radio”.

From here, taking the car back, you can proceed for a few minutes to reach the third stop, or rather the small and charming jewel of Montelapiano. This is a characteristic village, also called the “terrace of Abruzzo” which is also the smallest and least inhabited municipality in the entire Abruzzo region.
Here you will be able to enjoy the peaceful and well-kept historic center, admire a very suggestive colored staircase and, after visiting the beautiful church of San Michele arcangelo, arrive at a panoramic point that will give you a special point of view over the Sangro valley. You will see the river with its transparent waters, Lake Bomba with its intense blue color and all the villages that dot the valley like points in the lush nature.
