The church of Santa Maria in Val Porclaneta is one of the most interesting examples of Abruzzese Romanesque art, in which Arabic-Hispanic, Byzantine and Longobard influences flow together.
It is located on the slopes of Monte Velino at m. 1022 meters high, reachable by following a characteristic mule track that connects it to the nearby village of Rosciolo, a hamlet of Magliano de ‘Marsi. The monastic presence on the site is certainly earlier than 1080, when “Count Berardo, son of Berardo, Count of the Marsi, donated to the monastery of Montecassino the monastery of Santa Maria in Valle Porclaneta and the castle of Rosciolo with its appurtenances” ( as documented by the Lubin A., Abbatiarum Italiae brevis notitia, Rome 1693).
