Lake Barrea is an artificial lake located in Abruzzo in the province of L’Aquila. The municipalities of Civitella Alfedena and Villetta Barrea also overlook the lake, created in 1951 by the damming of the Sangro river at the Barrea gorge.
The wetland of Lake Barrea, identified and included since 1976 in the list of areas envisaged by the Ramsar convention, affects the territory of the lake, located within the national park of Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise, in the mountain community Alto Sangro and Cinquemiglia plateau.
There are three possibilities to reach the municipalities bordering the lake: from Castel di Sangro, from Pescasseroli or, if coming from Lazio, from the Forca d’Acero pass (through the Sora-Pescasseroli highway). The distance from the aforementioned accesses varies from about 15 to 20 km.
