Castelmezzano, in the province of Potenza, is among the most beautiful treasures of Basilicata. The most fascinating spectacle of Castelmezzano is that offered by the scenery of the Lucanian Dolomites which form its backdrop.
Over time the rain and the wind have carved shapes into this sandstone rock to which popular tradition has given particular names, in fact with particular conditions of light and shadow they take the shape of “owl’s beak”, “snapdragon”, of “anvil” and “golden eagle”.
The arrival in the small village is somewhat unusual because you enter through a tunnel dug into the rock after passing a spectacular gorge. Upon exiting the tunnel, Castelmezzano appears like a small nativity scene perched and protected by the Lucanian Dolomites.
An interesting and adrenaline-filled activity is the famous Flight of the Angel (see this link for more information). Photo by David Mark from Pixabay
