The Bioparco di Roma (formerly called the Rome Zoological Garden) has a history dating back over 100 years, inaugurated on 5 January 1911 by Carl Hagenbeck, who introduced a new concept of zoo with moats instead of cages.
Initially, zoos served a purely recreational purpose, displaying rare and exotic animals to entertain the public.
In 1935, the architect Raffaele De Vico expanded the Rome zoo, bringing it to an area of 17 hectares, including a reptile house and a large geodesic aviary unique in Europe. This zoo soon became one of the most important in Europe.
However, due to war events and mismanagement, the zoo entered into decline. In 1994, the idea of transforming it into a Biopark was born and in 1998 the project was implemented, with the transformation into the Foundation taking place in 2004.
This change reflected the evolution of the concept of the zoo, moving from a simple animal museum to a facility committed to the conservation of threatened species, biodiversity education and scientific research.
The Rome Biopark follows the World Zoo Strategy for Conservation, promoted by international organizations such as WAZA and IUCN, together with the WWF, thus outlining the modern role of a zoo.
How long does it take to tour the Bioparco di Roma?
While it’s not huge, making it perfect for a leisurely visit, you might be surprised at how much it can offer in less than two hours.
But, be careful parents, if you bring little explorers with you eager to discover every corner, we advise you to plan a longer stop, perhaps between 5 and 6 hours. This way, you will have all the time you need to fully immerse yourself in animal wonders without feeling rushed.
