What to see in the small village of Monticchiello?
During a visit to the village of Montichiello you can visit the parish church of Saints Leonardo and Cristoforo in Romanesque-Gothic style which dominates the ancient castle of the village, the Parish church of Santa Maria dello Spino and the Torre del Cassero, closed to the public, but still clearly visible from the outside.
But the Monticchiello village is also known and visited for its so-called “poor” theater. In this form of theater all the inhabitants become authors / actors of a performance that takes place in the summer, outdoors every year for over 50 years.
Another peculiarity is represented by a stone head, called Testa di Montichiello, which is located on a house in via San Luigi, 13, on which the inscription “O BECERO FAI LA SPIA SI” has been affixed.
The writing refers to a story told by the locals and which says that at the end of the 1800s the owner of the house accused the owner of the house opposite of having spied on the authorities and having made him go through trouble and out of spite he sculpted the face of the opposite so that he would see her every day by way of mockery.
