Casamari Abbey is a Cistercian abbey in the province of Frosinone, Lazio, Italy, about 10 kilometers (6 miles) east-southeast of Veroli.
The Casamari Abbey was founded in 1203 by San Brunone di Colonia, a Cistercian monk who settled in the valley of the Amaseno river together with some followers. The construction of the abbey was completed in 1217 and it became one of the main centers of diffusion of the Cistercian order in Italy.
The abbey is characterized by splendid Romanesque and Gothic architecture, with a large church with a beautiful rose window on the main façade and an interior with a central nave and two lateral ones. The abbey has undergone many restorations and renovations over the centuries, but has retained much of its original structure.
Inside, the Casamari Abbey houses a vast collection of works of art, including frescoes and paintings, sculptures, manuscripts and ancient books. Furthermore, the abbey has a large library which holds thousands of volumes, many of which are manuscripts from the 13th and 14th centuries.
Today, the Casamari Abbey is still an important religious centre, but it also hosts numerous cultural and artistic activities, such as art exhibitions, concerts and conferences. Furthermore, the abbey is open to the public and can be visited every day of the year. To find out more, see this link.
