In its majestic elegance and solid structure, the Abbey of Fossanova represents a true jewel of Cistercian architecture, prototype of a new taste, transplanted from Burgundy to central-southern Italy, manifesto of a new spirituality.
Fossanova Abbey, daughter of Altacomba Abbey, was built between 1163 and 1208 and is an excellent example of the early Italian Gothic style, representing a clear transition from Romanesque to Gothic.
The interior, almost devoid of frescoes (some fragments are still visible on the walls until 1998), reflects the austere memento mori of the Cistercian monks.
Declared a “national monument” in 1874, the Abbey of Fossanova is the oldest example of Cistercian art in Italy and, together with the Abbey of Casamari, represents one of its greatest expressions. The complex was built at the end of the 12th century from the transformation of a pre-existing Benedictine monastery, perhaps dating back to the 6th century, of which a faint trace remains above the rose window of the church.
Where is Fossanova Abbey located?
The Abbey of Fossanova is located in the municipality of Priverno, 5 km south of the urban centre, in the province of Latina. The surrounding village, which has the appearance of a vicus, takes its name from a sewer which in the early days of the small village was called Fossa Nova.
