How to get to the Franchetti refuge? The Franchetti refuge is an enchanting corner located in the heart of the Gran Sasso National Park. Inaugurated in 1960 and built by the Roman section of the C.A.I. in the 1950s, it stands majestically at 2,433 meters above sea level on a rocky spur in the Vallone delle Cornacchie.
Made of limestone and clad in wood, the refuge offers a spectacular view of the hills of Teramo Abruzzo and the Adriatic Sea. With its intimate dimensions, Rifugio Franchetti retains the charm and hospitality of the refuges of the past, guaranteeing an authentic experience and direct contact between guests and staff.
Refreshment areas, rooms, beds and bathrooms
The refuge offers several dining options, with 24 seats available both inside and outside, allowing you to enjoy a meal in a cozy environment or in the open air. For overnight stays, the refuge has two dormitories that can accommodate up to 23 people, ideal for groups or hikers. A shared bathroom is available to guests, ensuring the essential services for a comfortable stay in the mountains.
How to get to the Franchetti refuge
The quickest way to reach the Rifugio Franchetti is to leave from Prati di Tivo and take the cable car to Madonnina, located at about 2015 meters. From here, an easy and panoramic path will take you to the refuge in about an hour. From Madonnina, it is also possible to follow the Pier Paolo Ventricini via ferrata, which goes around the north side of Corno Piccolo, crosses Spalle and arrives at Sella dei Due Corni, offering a spectacular view of the Vallone delle Cornacchie; from there, in a few minutes, you descend to the refuge. An alternative is to cross from the Albergo di Campo Imperatore passing through Sella di Monte Aquila, Sella del Brecciaio and Passo del Cannone (EE, 2.30/3.00 hours).
