Passo San Leonardo is located at 1282 meters above sea level and is a pass in the central Apennines, located in Abruzzo, in the western part of the Maiella massif. It is located south-east of the Morrone group of mountains, within the municipal areas of Pacentro and Sant’Eufemia a Maiella.
It falls within the territory of the Maiella national park and is a starting point for ascents, in particular, through the “rava della mare bianca” (the so-called “direttissima”). Through this path it is possible to reach Mount Amaro, the highest peak of the Maiella at an altitude of 2795 m a.s.l.
Traveled by the state road 487, it connects Pacentro with Sant’Eufemia a Maiella, with the possibility of reaching Campo di Giove via the provincial road 54. This place is characterized by strong south-west winds and recurring mists, especially during the winter months, when there are abundant snowfalls, as detected by the meteorological station present.
What to do in Passo San Leonardo?
Passo San Leonardo is perfect for outdoor activities in both summer and winter. It houses a ski resort with ski slopes and a cross-country ski ring. Inside it is also possible to go horse riding and hiking, as well as cycling.
Paths starting from the Pass
There are several paths that start from this location. For useful and exhaustive information, we suggest you visit the ParcoMajella.it website. Among the many we recommend the path with code Q8 which leads from Passo San Leonardo to Roccacaramanico
The Q8 path is a pleasant excursion that allows you to go from Passo San Leonardo to Roccacaramanico in a short time. This difference in height is very small. The first section runs on the edge of the beech forest which immediately gives way to a prairie environment, this allows you to enjoy magnificent views of the Maiella and its ravines, which rise directly to the main peaks of the massif. The itinerary is also covered by the Sentiero Italia of the Italian Alpine Club, as well as being part of the Cammino di Celestino.
