The Castle of the Conti Guidi in Poppi, Arezzo in Tuscany, is located in Piazza della Repubblica. In addition to being the main moment of the village, it is located inside the Casentino Ecomuseum, in the Castellana Civilization System. The village of Poppi is perched on a hill on the right bank of the Arno river, in the center of the Casentino valley.
The Castle has medieval origins and the first records date back to the year 1191. It was restructured in 1274 by order of Count Simone Guidi and his son Guido Guidi. A few years later, exactly on 11 June 1289, the battle of Campaldino took place right under the walls of the castle between the Guelphs, mainly from Florence, and the Ghibellines, mainly from Arezzo.
What is inside the Castle?
The interior of the Castle which for years has been used as municipal administration spaces. Now it is possible to visit an ancient chapel, the museum that recounts the battle of Campaldino, a library and the Giovanni Gualberto Miniati Documentation Centre.
What are the opening days and hours of the Castello dei Conti Guidi in Poppi?
The opening days and times are Monday to Thursday from 10 to 18 (last admission 17.30). From Friday to Sunday, instead, from 10 to 19 (last admission 18.30).
During the month of August: from Monday to Thursday: 10 – 19 and from Friday to Sunday: 10 – 20, always with last entry within half an hour before closing.
