The Castle of Vincigliata, Firenze, is located not far from Fiesole in the Vincigliata area. This castle perhaps represents the best example of how the English colony that enlivened the cultural life of Florence in the 19th century saw the romantic dream of the Middle Ages.
The Castle dates back to 1031 and has a trapezoidal plan of almost 400 metres. Surrounded by a defensive wall, it includes a keep, a watchtower, a courtyard, a loggia and a cloister.
How is the Castle of Vincigliata organised?
The current palace was built on the remains of the fortress, preserving as much as possible the original parts and following their shape. The interior decoration was entrusted to Gaetano Bianchi who, in his artistic work, was inspired by Christian legends that imitate medieval art. An original cycle of frescoes from a chapel in the church of San Martino in via della Scala in Florence was also incorporated, which tells Stories of San Bernardo degli Uberti. Sculptural works were also added and created by local sculptors Giustini and Marucelli.
The park to visit
Through the introduction of the waters of the Mensola stream, the natural basin of the Cava delle Colonne has been transformed into a small lake-swimming pool. In this romantic park, the shores of the lake are made up of boulder rocks on one side that protrude to form suggestive caves, and on the other they are bordered by masonry embankments. The vegetation leans towards the surface of the pond, in which aquatic plants, such as water lilies, irises, papyrus, water lilies and reeds, give color to the pool.
