The Volturno river in Molise is considered the longest river in southern Italy. In fact, it originates in Molise near Rocchetta a Volturno, in the province of Isernia, and crossing the province of Caserta, in Campania, flows into the Tyrrhenian Sea near Castel Volturno. Its waters are rapid and clear and at its springs you can visit a beautiful waterfall with crystal clear water.
In the 7th century, the important Abbey of San Vincenzo al Volturno was founded near the sources, on the left bank of the river, near Rocchetta a Volturno, which will soon become a flourishing monastic complex in the area, competing for the territory with the Abbey of Montecassino .
