La Solfa is the area of the sulphurous waters of Raiano, in Abruzzo, which flow from the spring. They are located in a very particular environment with walls dating back to the 2nd century BC. Some studies attest that this place was already frequented since ancient times. In fact, Pliny the Elder in his “Naturalis Historia” already describes the districts where the Peligne people lived.
We are in Raiano, a small town within the regional nature reserve called Gola di San Venanzio, also known for the homonymous hermitage which falls within the territory of the small municipality. A few kilometers from the city, there is a green oasis, the La solfa spring, one of the major sources of the Reserve. The flow is stabilized around 80 liters per second throughout the year with a temperature of around 12°
The presence of these remains, combined with archaeological data and the value that water had in those times, suggests that the source was considered by the ancients as “sacred”.
These sulphurous waters also have diuretic, purifying and detoxifying properties and are used to feed the recent Terme di Raiano.
