The Piccolomini Castle in Celano, in Abruzzo, is the clearest sign of the medieval fortification of the city, traced by the city walls still visible today. The construction works of the castle began around 1392 by the will of Pietro Berardi, count of Celano. The same works continued until 1463 when Antonio Todeschini-Piccolomini, nephew of Pope Pius II, completed the monumental work.
Initially built as a defensive structure and later transformed into a noble residence, the charm of the Castle of Celano consists in the fusion of strong medieval and Renaissance elements. The surrounding walls of the structure are interrupted by five round towers and eleven shield towers, while a drawbridge allows you to cross a moat to access the main entrance.
The Castle of Celano has a rectangular plan with four square towers at the corners enriched by Ghibelline-style battlements. An ancient well-cistern is still visible in the center of the internal courtyard. The monument is home to the Marsica Museum of Sacred Art and the Torlonia Collection of Fucino Antiquities.
