The Rocca di Vignola is a fortress located in the province of Modena, in Emilia Romagna, Italy. The Rocca di Vignola was built in the 14th century on a rocky hill overlooking the city. Initially, the fortress was commissioned by Count Giovanni da Barbiano, but it later changed hands several times between local noble families.
The Rocca di Vignola has an imposing parallelepiped-shaped structure with four corner towers, which give it an imposing and suggestive appearance. The building has different phases of construction, starting from the original tower, dating back to the fourteenth century, and subsequently enlarged and renovated in the following centuries.
This place was used for defensive purposes until the 17th century when it was transformed into a noble residence. During the 20th century, the Rocca was restored and today houses a museum that tells the story of the fortress and the city of Vignola.
The fortress is one of the most iconic places in the province of Modena and represents an important example of military architecture of the medieval period. Thanks to its panoramic position, it offers a breathtaking view of the city below and the surrounding vineyards.
