In this short article you will learn about the Soprasasso Caves and the path to reach them with a not difficult excursion.
Have you ever heard of tafoni? These grooves carved into the rock are typical of maritime and arid areas, but it is not necessary to leave for exotic destinations to admire them.
In fact, they are also found in the Emilian hinterland: just head towards the Soprasasso Caves, a wonder of nature located about 50 kilometers from Bologna.
We are located in the town of Montecavalloro, in the municipality of Vergato, an area suspended between the valley of the Reno river and the panoramic mountains of the Bolognese Apennines, characterized by the presence of sandstone rocks.
The sandstone, generally porous and granular, has been shaped by the continuous action of the wind and condensation water at these altitudes, giving rise to a truly singular phenomenon.
Soprasasso Caves, here is the path to reach them
At the beginning of the route, park the car in a space on the side of the road (with capacity for 3-4 cars), taking care to leave enough space to allow passage, since the road is narrow and does not allow the transit of two vehicles at the same time.
Subsequently, take the uphill path following the signs for the “Grotte di Soprasasso”, which lead to the fascinating caves dug by the action of wind and rain. The route takes about an hour and also offers the opportunity to admire a magnificent panoramic view. Below we leave you the route reported on Wikiloc by giacomor_ because it is done very well.
Where to park and what to see nearby
The Soprasasso Caves are located about 50 kilometers from Bologna, in the municipality of Vergato. It is advisable to enter the small free car park of the caves, located in Serra-Riola, in the navigator, from where the path to access them starts.
However, the caves are not the only point of interest in this area of the Bolognese Apennines. If you decide to spend a day in these areas, you could also take the opportunity to visit the Labante Caves and their waterfall, which can also be reached via a path, as well as the Rocchetta Mattei, the famous medieval and Moorish style castle built by Count Mattei around the middle of the nineteenth century.
