Have you already visited the Pennadomo waterfall with its gorge? Abruzzo has many places that are easily accessible and wonderful to visit. (This visit was made by Viaggiando Italia staff on 11 May 2024).
What we tell you about and recommend visiting in this article is located in the Sangro Valley region, in the eastern part of the Maiella massif, in Abruzzo, and is also easily reachable from the coast.
It is a place that will allow you to have an interesting experience between water, geology and relaxation.
We are talking about the Pennadomo Waterfall inside the gorges of the same name. They are located a short distance from the town of Pennadomo, also known for its eccentric “rock creations” which also allow sport climbing.
How to reach the Pennadomo Waterfall?
Reaching this place is quite simple. It is, in fact, located a short distance from the main road that connects the Sangro Valley with the town of Pennadomo.
Traveling along this road, just before arriving at the town you will begin to see some particularly characteristic rock formations on your left. You will find a small lay-by on the left side of the road where you can park your car. If it helps you, here is the GPS point of the car park.
A few meters away you will notice a small bridge that crosses a watercourse. This water is the San Leo river which, a little further downstream, will become a tributary of the Sangro river.
Some advice for the visit
With all the necessary precautions, therefore with suitable shoes and the use of a small helmet, you will be able to enter the gorges which are located on the right side near the bridge. GPS entry point to the gorge.
Just a few dozen meters and you can already see the waterfall drop. According to the conditions of the water flow, I could cross the small stream thanks to passages made with stones. So you will be able to walk around a large rock and find yourself faced with an incredible spectacle.
A waterfall of several meters that ends up in a beautiful natural pool. On the left you will see the rocks that almost look like papier-mâché, smoothed over millennia by the flow of water. We recommend stopping to take some photographs and relax body and mind with the sound of the water.
