The Infiorata of Genzano is a traditional popular event held every year in the town of Genzano di Roma, located about 30 km southeast of the Italian capital.
The festival originates in the seventeenth century, when the streets of the town began to be decorated with flowers to celebrate Corpus Domini. Today, the event takes place in June and attracts thousands of visitors from all over the world every year.
Infiorata consists in the creation of carpets of flowers that cover the streets of the town. The works created are of great beauty and variety and represent religious, historical and cultural themes. The preparation of the carpets requires months of work and involves the whole community of Genzano.
How is the Infiorata of Genzano prepared?
The villagers collect the flowers, dry them and use them to create intricate and detailed designs on the streets of the historic centre. The event culminates with a religious procession that crosses the carpets of flowers and destroys them, symbolizing the transience of life.
Genzano Flower Festival is a unique and evocative tradition that represents an important testimony of the culture and history of the Lazio region.
In this 2023, the 245th edition of the Genzano Infiorata will take place on 10, 11 and 12 June 2023.
