Molise and its “carresi”. Several villages south of Termoli form a sort of “Albanian enclave” whose origin dates back to the 15th century. They are villages that are very characteristic and full of interesting traditions. Among these Campomarino, Portocannone, San Martino in Pensilis and Ururi. The inhabitants still use a characteristic version of the Albanian language.
In addition to their origin, these villages are known for their carresi or the chariot races pulled by bulls – very wild and no holds barred – which are organized every year: in Ururi (May 3), in Portocannone (il Monday after Pentecost) and San Martino in Pensilis (April 30) stages a chariot race with no holds barred.
The wagons run through a bucolic path around the town encouraged by the inhabitants, some of them following them on horseback. The connections with these villages are not very simple, so the best way is by car even if some public buses connect them daily with the largest city of Termoli.
