The Abbey of San Vincenzo al Volturno is a historic Benedictine abbey located in the territory of the municipalities of Castel San Vincenzo and Rocchetta a Volturno in the Province of Isernia, in the Upper Volturno Valley. Right at the foot of the high peaks of the Mainarde and on the banks of the lively waters of the Volturno River, stands this ancient Abbey of San Vincenzo al Volturno which has the value of having imprinted, over the centuries, its sign of culture and testimony of faith in the events that affected the entire valley.
This abbey truly possesses a particular charm, not only for its architecture, but also for the fact that its history is provided to us by an ancient illuminated code written in 1130 by a monk named Giovanni: the Chronicon Vulturnense, a code which in its he had once used internal sources of the monastery dating back to the 8th-11th century. During the Second World War, some of the ruins of the Abbey and the adjacent church were bombed and suffered heavy damage.
