In this article we suggest you visit the small and charming village of Pievebovigliana which is located in the province of Macerata, in the Marche region.
Its origins are very ancient: we talk about settlements, Neolithic pottery, clay material belonging to the Iron Age. All this demonstrates that primitive man chose the Chienti valley and its tributaries as the place for his “home”, including the Fornace, from which the history of the town of Pievebovigliana begins.
If you arrive in Pievebovigliana you can go up the suggestive streets and stairways that lead to the castle. The fortress constitutes the historic inhabited center. The castle was destroyed in 1528 but some buildings still remain. Even if we are talking about ancient remains, the ancient “vessel” shaped structure is still clearly legible. The layout of the town is clearly medieval urban, from which picturesque and evocative views open up.
What to see during a visit to Pievebovigliana?
Pievebovigliana is a fascinating town, it has always been a crossroads of people who moved between the valleys that lead to the fertile Marche plain and the first mountain pastures that open the way to the landscape of the Sibillini mountains.
A part of the municipal territory is included within the Sibillini Mountains National Park of the same name, a territory and scenery perfect for excursions and walks. There are numerous nature itineraries, to be explored on foot, by bike or on horseback, among chestnut groves, meadows, woods, plateaus or along the banks of the two lakes present in the municipal area, one of which is included in a wildlife oasis and equipped for birdwatching.
If you focus on the town, beyond the castle, in the heart of the historic center you can visit the church of Santa Maria Assunta, of Romanesque structure but with neoclassical style interiors. The church preserves a precious crypt dating back to the 11th century, recovered in 1930.
Inside the town hall, the museum complex can be visited. The objects on display and the information available will allow you to retrace the entire social and artistic history of the municipal area. A long and rich history, from prehistoric times to today.
The museum complex is made up of the “V. Cianfarani” Archaeological Museum, the “R. Campelli” Civic Museum, the Historical Museum of the Territory, the collection of woodcuts by Maria Ciccotti and the Gino Marotta Collection.
What are the products and traditions of the village?
But the small town of Pievebovigliana in the Marche region is not just history, art and culture. Obviously it is also gastronomy.
In fact, among the typical local products there are ciauscolo, a typical sausage from the Marche and Umbria regions, as well as truffles, honey, cheeses, cereals, chestnuts and, naturally, ciauscoloand ciauscolo, which have made Pievebovigliana known nationally and international.
During a walk in the village it is also possible to visit ciauscolo dedicated to the production of ciauscolo with theciauscolo technique and shops that sell typical local food products (such as the mistrà liqueur, with very ancient origins, prepared with anise seeds still green, macerated in alcohol for 40 days and appreciated as a digestive and as a coffee corrector).
