The Soprasasso Caves, in the Bolognese Apennines, are located in the Municipality of Vergato, are an idea for a spectacular day trip from Bologna. They can be reached with a beautiful path within everyone’s reach that allows you to admire all the valleys and enjoy the view of Corno alle Scale up to Cimone in the distance.
The caves are spread over an area of about 10 square kilometers and their system of underground tunnels extends for about 35 kilometres. The tourist visit is concentrated on a portion of about 1 kilometre, which represents only a small part of the caves.
Inside the caves you can admire numerous stalactites, stalagmites and other limestone formations, as well as some fossils of extinct animals. Furthermore, the Grotte di Soprasasso represent an important habitat for several species of bats, some of which are in danger of extinction.
The caves are open to the public and can be visited accompanied by expert guides, who illustrate the geological and biological history of the place. The visit includes a circular route, which lasts about an hour and a half, and which presents various difficulties and height differences, therefore it is advisable to wear comfortable shoes and suitable clothing.
In summary, the Grotte di Soprasasso are an interesting tourist attraction for nature and geology lovers, offering the possibility to explore one of the largest karst cave systems in the region.
