Montemerano is a fraction of the Italian municipality of Manciano, in the province of Grosseto, in Tuscany. The characteristic medieval village was built during the 13th century by the Aldobrandeschi family on the highest part of the hill.

In the 14th century, control of the town passed to the Baschi family, who led it to submit to Orvieto. During the fifteenth century Siena took possession of Montemerano and transformed it into an imposing fortress.

Beyond the ancient walls of the village, the churches of San Giorgio, Pieve di San Lorenzo and of the Madonna del Cavalluzzo, certainly worth visiting the Piazza del Castello. It is a scenic square intact in its medieval layout and stone houses. Its threshold consists of an arch that opens at the end of a short steeply uphill street.

When is the best time to visit Montemerano?

Montemerano can be visited all year round. However, the best time to visit Montemerano depends on your preferences and the activities you want to do during your trip.

Here are some considerations to help you choose the best time to visit Montemerano:

  • Summer: During the summer, from June to September, the days are long and warm and most outdoor activities such as walking, wine tasting, hiking and sightseeing can easily be organised.
  • Spring and Autumn: Spring and Autumn are less crowded times and ideal for those who want to avoid the summer crowds and enjoy the peace and quiet of the area. In this period the temperatures are milder and nature is luxuriant.
  • Winter: Winter in Montemerano is relatively mild and offers the opportunity to explore the region in a more peaceful atmosphere and to discover its traditions and culture.

Ultimately, the best time to visit Montemerano depends on your personal preferences and the activities you want to do during your trip. Choose the moment when you are most at ease and enjoy your stay in Montemerano!
